It is okay to listen to secular music until Christian music becomes better than it.
Since that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen this century, you’re good to go.
I stopped listening to secular music right when I got saved, but I was listening mostly to gangsta rap and things that aren’t really permissible OR beneficial.
My favorite secular music is Mary Chapin Carpenter, Harry Chapin, Rufus Wainwright, mostly folksy stuff.
As far as Christian music, I totally adore “You Won’t Relent” by Misty Edwards, all of Jennifer Knapp, “From the Inside Out by Hillsong, John Waller, Knine, Jay Reed, and Justin Rizzo (IHOP).

whoa fighter! there’s good christian music. you just gotta look for it!
Jon Foreman from Switchfoot, shane and shane, and David Crowder Band is one of my top favs right now on the Christian list.
as for secular, I like anything with a good guitar. However, I admit my guilty pleasures are all the sketchy rap music (not the good kind)
As with most everything I’d say take what works for you. Do you only look at art that depicts Mary and the baby Jesus? Do you only watch the God Channel on TV? Do you only mix with people from your church?
It seems like I like a little Avalon (just the “Oxygen” CD) but mostly don’t listen to most pop christian music. There’s very few times when it jives for me for some reason. The few Christian songs that I say I like are actually really old ones (i.e. “Halle, Halle Halle,” “Hush, Somebody’s calling my name,” “Lully, Lullay”) or artists that aren’t even considered “Christian” in the US (Moya Brennan).
As for secular music, Sarah Brightman, Mates of State, Pink Martini and tons of old folk music.
