Beth, a Christian, and her atheist friend Traci decided it would be fun to visit Christian women’s ministries together and write about their experiences. They’ll be posting about them regularly on our ChurchRater blog.
To give you a taste, this is what they posted after the first two visits (they’ll be writing about them in more detail soon - this was just a quick update):
A quick debrief on the heels of a spiritual formation workshop (soulcare) and — a mere 13 hours later — BSF
Traci was greeted with a hug at her first women’s ministry event.
Beth’s stress zit is beginning to vanish.Traci opted out of dinner before the workshop.
Beth joined Traci for post-workshop beer and debriefing chez Cumbay where Dr. Cumbay stunned her by saying, “Traci is the least spiritual person I’ve ever met.”Traci earned bonus points in our “I’ve never said that” game when she said, “I need to go shower - I have Bible study this morning” before BSF.
Beth exhibited a tiny bit of Christ-like (righteous) road rage on the way to BSF.Beth anticipated a hug from the syrup-smiled greeter who rushed her at the door but got spanked instead for trying to carry Starbucks into the sanctuary.
Traci remains awed by the reaction to Beth’s introducing her as an atheist.
Update: Traci posted Beth and Traci and the Looks on Their Faces this weekend.
Popularity: 3% [?]

The syrup smiled greeter should be flogged for trying to prevent the holy receptacle of St Arbucks from entering the sanctuary. Flogged I say.
BWAHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
What is the reaction to Beth’s introducing Traci as an atheist? Some of those anecdotes, particularly from Beth’s point of view, would be interesting.
And what’s the big deal with the Starbucks? Why couldn’t she bring that in? It’s so delicious…
Huh? I am not geting the point…should a few bad experiences be allowed to put labels on the rest? I have my share of bad experiences, but the good ones were so worth looking for. I agree some churches are way off in thier priorities, but not all. Changing them starts with the individual…I am trying to make a difference. I try not to have negative things to say about these churches, and I try the same to not judge or be negative about some elses choices as well.
Sorry Helen I don’t get it!8->
Hi Darla, why did you think this is going to be about bad experiences?
They are going to write about their experiences whether good or bad.
I don’t know!
Darla - ok, fair enough
I think it’s understandable that an atheist would be nervous about going to Christian meetings and that her Christian friend might be apprehensive about how she would be received.
So I can see why they aren’t going into this sure that all their experiences will be good.
However if you read Traci’s post which I linked to at the very end of my post, you’ll see she was pleasantly surprised at how welcoming the women were. I’d say that was a good experience, not a bad one!
One of the things that I love sooo much about my Church is that is really is a family. I came in for the first time and received hugs, some stupid college stupid felt instantly loved.
That’s what GOD does.
People give hugs too… I give hugs. Here you go:
::hug::
God didn’t tell me to do that, either; I just wanted to.
@Sara…
Just spent a few min looking at your blog.
Dartmouth AND Harvard?? Wowsers.
^:)^
Careful, I blush easily.
:”>
See?
Hmm… The blushing icon didn’t show up.
I smell a bug. Alas.
